Why Per Character?

Three Main Reasons

Going Green

The Reporter

The Reporter

Less pages printed => saved trees.

Our narrow margins and increased lines per page allow us to fit more in a page, all while retaining readability.

The Reporter

The Reporter

The Reporter

There are verbose transcripts, and there are pithy transcripts. We want the reporters to be accurately reimbursed for the work they are doing.

Convenience

The Reporter

Convenience

Lawyers shouldn't have to worry whether they have enough room in their briefcase for a transcript or not, which is why our transcripts are neatly condensed.

Simple Sample Transcripts

40-Line Format

With succinct questions and brief answers, this simple sample transcript is a total of 725 characters. On a standard turnaround at $0.0080 per character, a client would be billed $5.80.

725 characters x $0.0080 = $5.80

25-Line Format

The same simple transcript in 25-line format billed at the $4.80 per page would be billed nearly 30 percent higher than a per character rate.

2 pages x $4.80 = $9.60

Wordy Sample Transcripts

40-Line Format

With longer questions and more detailed answers, this transcript totals 2,790 characters.

2,789 characters x $0.0080 = $22.32

25-Line Format

In this case, the court reporter has completed more work for a denser transcript and yet earned 15 percent less than the per character rate total. We leave the question to you, dear reader: Is this fair compensation?

4 pages x $4.80 = $19.20

Q Good morning.

A Morning.

Q Please state your name.

A Bob McBoberson.

Q Are you a representative of 22Keys?

A Yes.

Q What's your role in the company?

A I'm a fictional person answering questions in a sample transcript.

Q Does that mean I'm fictional too?

A Yes.

Q Remind me to have an existential crisis on the break.

A Okay.

Q I understand 22Keys's transcripts are formatted differently.

A Yes.

Q Please describe those differences.

A Smaller margins, 40 lines a page, less white space.

Q And 22Keys is billing per character and not per page?

A Yes.

Q Why?

A Three main reasons: a more accurate reflection of the work completed by the reporter, a reduction of our carbon footprint, and convenience.

Q Per character versus per page -- what's the price difference?

A That depends.

Q On what?

A Transcript density.

Q Can I see some samples?

A Absolutely.

Q Good morning.  Could you please state your name for the record.

A My full legal name is Robert McRobertson, but you can call me Bob.

Q Bob, are you here today as a representative of 22Keys?

A Indeed I am.

Q Please provide a brief description of your role within the company.

A I'm a fictional person who answers questions in a sample transcript.

Q Oh, goodness.  Does that mean that I'm --

A Yes.

Q -- a fictional character --

A Yeah.

Q -- too?

A It sure does.

Q Remind me to have an existential crisis on the break.

A I can do that.

Q Moving on.  The transcripts from 22Keys look like they're formatted differently.

A Yes.  They have smaller margins, and they are 40 lines per page instead of 25 lines per page.

Q And the transcripts appear to have less white space overall.

A Yes.  That was the goal.

Q What's the reasoning behind that?

A We wanted to reduce our carbon footprint in a paper-heavy industry.  And esthetics is another reason, I suppose.

Q All right.  Well, regarding billing practices, I've heard 22Keys charges per character instead of per page.  Is that the case?

A Yes, that's the case:  22Keys bills per character as opposed to per page.

Q That strikes me as unusual for a court reporting firm.  What would be the reasoning behind that?

A Are you asking for the reasoning behind it striking you as unusual or the reasoning behind billing per character instead of per page?

Page 2 of 2:

Q Please tell me why 22Keys bills a transcript by character count and not by the transcript's number of pages.

A Well, I suppose there are three main reasons that I can think of right off the top of my head.

I've already mentioned this one:  By billing per character, we can revise the format of the transcript in a more eco-friendly manner.  Our narrow margins and increased lines per page allow us to fit more in a page with less white space -- while retaining readability, of course.  Less white space results in less pages which then results in less trees used for a printed transcript.

Another reason is that billing per character as opposed to per page more accurately represents the work a reporter is doing.  A 30-page transcript of simple yes-no questions and answers is more straightforward than 30 pages of expert witness testimony in a specialized field that results in a painstaking amount of time in research of the field and relevant terms to ensure accuracy, in addition to a transcript's regular production of scoping and proofing.  With long, convoluted questions and answers, text-fuelled transcripts are considerably more work.  By charging per character, we're distinguishing our work by word density as opposed to transcript length.

The third reason is that reporters often noticed lawyers bringing in the condensed version of a transcript to a discovery, the condensed version being four transcript pages per printed page.  We understand this is because lawyers want to reduce the amount of paperwork carried to and fro.  By billing per character, we could condense the transcript overall and reduce the amount of pages printed so that lawyers can worry less of what they can fit in their briefcase.

Q Interesting.  But what's the overall price difference?  Would an individual pay more or less for a transcript if you're billing per character instead of per page?

A That fully depends on the transcript density, and I will happily provide sample transcripts for your reference.
